In Business For Over 100 Years

CITY Laundering Company Established
In 1906 Herbert Wetlaufer founded CITY Laundering Co by borrowing $850.00 and purchasing equipment from a defunct laundry in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The equipment was shipped to Oelwein and set up in a rented building at 204 South Frederick Street. The first week of operation was May 26, 1906.
CITY Adds First Truck to the Fleet
It was 1915 when the company bought its first truck. Previously, all deliveries were made by horse and wagon.
2nd Generation CITY President
CITY Founder Herbert Wetlaufer's oldest son Gerald became manager in 1945 when the business incorporated. Under the supervision of Gerald, the textile rental portion of the business grew tremendously.
2nd Generation, 3rd Wetlaufer
In 1972, Roger B. Wetlaufer became the CITY president after the death of his older brother of Under his leadership, the rental textile division grew tremendously.
CITY Joins the Computer Era
While CITY has always been on the forefront of technology inside their processing, it was not until 1980 that CITY purchased its first company computer.
3rd Generation Becomes CITY President
In 1979, after graduation from Luther College in management, Roger J. Wetlaufer joined CITY. He served as Vice-President and General Manager until March 1992, at which time he became the CITY.
New CITY Headquarters Built
In 1993, the company suffered a devastating fire at its main processing plant. Though it took over a year to rebuild, CITY's headquarters remains in this same corporate office located in Oelwein, Iowa.
CITY Celebrates 100 Years
CITY hosted a 2-day celebration, one for employees and one for customers in honor of hitting the 100 year mark.
Water Filtration System Installed
CITY installed the UltraPure water filtration system in their Iowa processing plant which recycles 70% of CITY's water usage.
CITY Installs UHF garment tracking system
CITY transformed its operations by investing in UHF chip technology. With this technology, they can track what comes into the processing facility and will be returned to the correct business.
CITY Installs Solar Panels / CITY's Becomes a Four Generation Company
CITY invests in solar panels to reduce their carbon footprint. Colin Wetlaufer becomes the 5th Wetlaufer to be the CITY president bringing CITY into their 4th Generation as a family owned and operated company.
Ground Opening of Service Center
CITY completed multiple grand openings of service centers from 2017-2021. New CITY service centers were opened in Polk City, Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Faribault, Minnesota.
CITY Expands Through Acquisition
CITY secures two more healthcare processing plants in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
State of the Art Equipment Installed
CITY installs a continuous batch tunnel washer, which is considered the pinnacle of efficiency in the laundry industry. They provide a high level of automation, ensuring consistent and controlled washing processes. This leads to optimal use of water, energy, and detergents, making them not only efficient but also environmentally friendly. Additionally, it handles large volumes of laundry quickly, significantly reducing turnaround time.
